To kick off Pride Month in June, we partnered with TA Magazine and Reading Night Club on a limited-edition candle that celebrates unapologetic self-expression.
We caught up with Kary Kwok, co-founder of TA Magazine, Reading Night Club collaborator, London-trained photographer, and avid magazine collector. We talked about his role at TA Magazine, how his love for magazine collecting blossomed and the scents that stayed with him.

1. You’re part of the creative team at TA Magazine. Can you explain what TA Magazine is and walk us through what your role is like?
TA Magazine is a non-binary publication aimed at expanding the meaning of “non-binary” to be more inclusive and diverse. We explore a variety of perspectives and lifestyles, creating a platform for artists and creators to express their views and ideas. Our goal is to challenge traditional magazine publishing and editing practices; instead of having “chief editors,” we operate with a “creative team and collaborators.” My role within the creative team involves creating content and connecting with people and communities to share their stories and events. Although we are primarily an online magazine, we also publish physical copies annually or whenever we are ready!
2. You spent your formative years in London studying photography. How did that experience shape your visual language and your approach to art direction today?
Studying photography at the Royal College of Art in London was a transformative experience. It allowed me to develop my own vision and “ways of seeing.” Collaborating with other departments, such as painting, industrial design, and architecture, provided me with the opportunity to explore how different disciplines approach creativity. This enriched my art direction and planning for projects and productions.

Self Portrait 3. You’re known to be an avid collector of magazines. What was the first magazine that truly captivated you, and what about it made you realize this was more than just a passing interest?
That’s a tough question to answer, but if I had to choose one magazine, it would be i-D Magazine. This British biannual publication is dedicated to fashion, music, art, film, and youth culture. Launched in 1980 by Terry Jones as a hand-stapled fanzine, it has since evolved into a glossy publication. I was captivated by its style and content, particularly the design and layout, as it was one of the first magazines to cover street fashion.
4. Scent and memory are deeply intertwined. What is a scent that takes you back to a specific time, place, or person? What is your all-time favorite scent?
Herbal and woody scents always transport me back to my childhood, as my uncle owned a Chinese medicine and picture frame shop. My all-time favorite scent is a blend of herbal, woody, and slightly smoky notes.
5. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to young creatives in Hong Kong trying to carve out their own space in editorial and publishing today?
Don’t give up on your dreams, and be patient!

6. When you’re not working, how do you unwind?
I enjoy spending time with friends and strangers, but I also make sure to carve out some “me time”!
